For Good Sport issue 05, we explored many questions – what does sport smell like? How unreal are sports? Who voices sport? Only to name a few.
As the printed pages left the printer and arrived at our studio, we continued to ask what stories and features are beyond the magazine's pages. Suppose they came from individuals and groups or real and physical events and objects. In that case, can we bring them to life outside of the words and images and find different mediums to present them.
This bought us to a week-long series of pop-up events and performances based on features and stories within Issue 05.
The week looked a little like this.
Tuesday: Self Reflection, One Plays The Part of Two.
Artist and MMA Athlete Adam Borello shadowboxed for 90minutes in the gallery window of Spacebound as people commuted, grabbed coffee and checked out the event live or live streamed. Supported by Reigning Champ, we watched Adam sweat his way through round after round in a room filled with mirrors.
Entire Film Coming Soon.
Wednesday: Climbing Fundamentals with Olympic Climber Oceana Mackenzie.
Following a Q&A with Oceana and her coach Will Hammersla, we set out to understand a bit more about the language of bouldering and try our hand and a range of new routes and beta. A huge thank you to Urban Climb for hosting us.
Thursday AM: A very early run followed by Half-Time Oranges with Long Prawn.
Celebrating the dawn call for sports, we ran past joggers, cyclists, tennis players and ballers all up before most other alarms had gone off.
Then in true Long Prawn form, we were presented a menu of Milo to refuel after the run.
Milo Dinosaur (sweet): Milo, condensed milk, water, ice.
Odd Socks (salty): Milo, soy milk, sourdough miso ice cream
Buffed up (boozy): Milo, vodka, coffee liqueur, milk, cream, ice
Thursday PM: Players, participants, fans and observers popped by our Ball Library to borrow a Swiss Ball, a High-Bounce Ball or disco ball and then caught a whiff of our fragrance at the Scent station set up in Collingwood Yards.
Closing out the week on Friday, we held an open-source Foursquare tournament before heading to the second-best rooftop bar in Melbourne to celebrate at RunnerUp.
Saturday was all about the conversation. A panel discussion about publishing as a tool for communication and the space between digital and print. Hosted at Composite Moving Image, we had Mat Ward from Uro Bookshop, Cristina Napoleone of Terrain Earth and Artist/Producer Sarah Lay.
You can re-watch the live stream by clicking here for those who missed this talk.
A huge thank you to all who came to one, some or all of the events throughout the week.
