Good Sport Magazine Newsletter – The sprint finish edition
A sprint finish, but as slow as possible.
As the weather in Melbourne moves from dismal, grey mornings so longer, warmer – albeit locked-down – nights, we’ve started to tuck into a bunch of new things over in the GS atmosphere. Harder workouts, weeks that feel longer and longer, a new print issue in the works. Lots of chasing the next thing, or the last of the next. Finding it, or letting it come to us, and then ticking it off. Trying to not lose track of where we are, to be present, but to also get there real soon. A sprint finish, as slow as possible.
In the rare, but exciting times, we get to see a sprint finish unfold, we think about the grit and determination it can take to push a little further, a little harder and know that the work behind you is doing you a solid.
Pictured is Kyle from AM:PM gritting it out on a solo half-marathon time trial. Even with no competitors in sight, the game is still the same. You sprint the finish for yourself, against yourself.
The last weekend was a huge occasion for a few sprint finishes, in both the men’s and women’s divisions of the London Marathon as well as the Liege Bastogne Liege. After the weekend’s viewing, we now get to set into the main event – the shoe breakdown from the marathon (minus the comment-section bickering). It’s a bittersweet affair of hypebeast energy, technological considerations and meaningless shoe politics.
When we’re not locked into the NBA finals, we’ve had episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast streaming one after the other. Most recently it was Mac Demarco chatting to Dayglow (AKA Sloan Struble), but dig back far enough and you’ll find chats between Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) and even Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) in discussion with The Zombies (The Zombies). Some huge guests on there having even bigger chats. And just as heavy-hitting, crowd favourites Nowness launched this gem about small-town Aussie wrestling just the other day.
No travel for us means endless pining over beaches, mountains and everything in between. In the meantime, we have digital pieces of perfect swells like this stunner from Craig Anderson and shots like this to take us away from the couch. WindowSwap also helps a lot.
Our friends from Issue 04, SampleCM in Berlin, released their newest instalment GB2021over the past week and it’s another epic collection, ‘exploring martial arts and breaking through the taboo of women’s anger.’ Tune on in and see what they’re all about. Pre-orders are open and each piece is bespoke and made to order.
Back on our home court, we had a chat with the minds behind our recent mug and long-sleeve release that you hopefully got your hands on! If not, don’t snap your racquet, there’s more goodness on the way super soon. For those who did get in on the kit, we’re super stoked to share the vibe. They’ll be getting wrapped up and on the way real soon! Your patience is much appreciated!
We’re kicking as always over on Are.na, connecting ideas and expanding perspectives, one simple pleasure at a time. There are some ideas in the works for us in terms of research and collaboration over on Are.na, so get yourself tapped in if you haven’t already. Here’s something to get the ball rolling. Add absolutely anything that in your eyes speaks to The Sound of Sport – web pages, text, audio, sketches… Anything. We’re sharing more from our playbook, and we’re asking for you our readers to share some of your plays in return. Even this one…
Yours, from the bench for now,
Good Sport.
