For any sports team and solo sports person, receiving a new uniform sits right up there next to winning. Not quite, but pretty close. We’re not a competitive magazine in any respects, but we’re hanging on to the winning feeling of a new uniform by unveiling - our new website.
We are what we wear, as far as uniforms go anyway. We tried to make our website feel like our magazine; an ample and clear amount of space [for stories to breathe], basically no ads, a few mistakes, a training ground to try new things, a suitable typeface and a bit of fun.
On our stories page, we go behind, behind the dream of arguably footballs best full-backs, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the team who made a personal and intimate documentary on him. OneWorldofSport is a duo from New Zealand who sells classic New Zealand sports nostalgia. The SnaggleRats are a group of young girls who are on a mission to save the Livingston skatepark. Designing your life through movement with four different people who are at the intersection of creativity and their athletic pursuits, starting with yoga teacher Phoebe Waters. Two polar opposite running stories; Nick Cusseneers attempts to run 160km around Melbourne during city lockdowns. And Unsanctioned - The running brand founded on the belief that it’s time for running to give back to the environment all runners take so much joy from, asked what would happen if we sent a single roll of tape to visual artists around the world?
Further viewing and reading; photographer Ari Macropolis new book is out now. It chronicles six years of the Conrad McRae Youth League Summer Tournament at Dean Street Playground in Brooklyn. Arshay Cooper’s new book tells the genuinely moving story of a group of young men growing up on Chicago’s Westside who form the first all African American school rowing team in the nation. The documentary is nearly out too. Scratched is a series of films that celebrate the lost sporting legends of Aotearoa, New Zealand. [The JumpJam outfits are unreal.] And there’s also a new film about one of the featured sporting heroes, table tennis player Chunli Li and her aim to get to Tokyo 2021 and win gold at the age of 57. Retired coach Phil Jackson sits with the author of the Mindful Athlete, George Mumford as a part of Wisdom 2.0. If you liked watching The Last Dance, this goes into areas that didn’t quite get talked about in the series. Town of Runners, 2012 Is a feature documentary about young runners from Bekoji - an Ethiopian highland town which has produced some of the world's greatest distance athletes. And Limitless showcases eight inspirational stories of women runners from across India and seeks to motivate more women to follow their passion and take up running. A portrait of "the female Michael Jordan," from troubled family life to basketball superstardom, reveals a long-hidden battle with mental illness in MIND/GAME.
Josie Long’s podcast ‘Shortcuts’ dives into a world of true stories, brief encounters, radio adventures and found sound. This episode on Endurance is fantastic. Catriona Bisset the Australian middle-distance athlete and national record holder in the 800 metres has a wonderful conversation on The Imperfects podcast.
