Climbers are like water in reverse here, slithering and flowing against gravity, so much so that climbing the limestone is often referred to as an art rather than a sport.
VISIONS is a film and limited edition hardcover art-book about self-discovery, nature, harmony, exploration and rock climbing in Kura Tāwhiti, Castle Hill - Aotearoa, New Zealand. A place that seems to thrill the human heart, which has long been a site of spiritual significance and artistic inspiration. In more recent times, it has become a magnet for rock climbers.
Many of the artists now seek a perfect feeling of body over rock, rather than simply making it to the top. The beauty of a good climber interacting with the rock here is plain for all to see. The approach to climbing has become more gentle with a greater attention to detail. The climbers’ shoes are kept extremely clean and chalk is used sparingly; when connecting with the high art of nature, great care is taken to minimise one’s footsteps.
Created in collaboration with a special group of climbers and friends who are the changing face of the sport. The result: a film and accompanying book called VISIONS produced by Good Sport Magazine and Arc'teryx.
Directed and photographed by Ben Clement and Mondo Hays. Publication design by Joshua Briones-Yap. Typeface by ABC Dinamo. 3D Visuals by Workgroup. Featured climbers: Alec McCallum, Elijohn Felipe, Erica Gatland, Isaac Buckley, Joshua Briones-Yap, Kenji Boekholt, Matilda Plant, Matthew Corbishley, Max Brown, and Riley Jean Butler.
